Here are a few hints about how to clean and maintain your copper apron sink:

  • Avoid any abrasive or harsh cleaners, as these can actually damage your sink and cause discoloration.
  • Check your water. If you have hard water, that is, water that is higher in mineral content, expect to have to do extra cleaning. To lessen your frequency of cleaning, wipe down any water out of the sink as often as possible.
  • Be aware of what you leave in the sink. Foods naturally high in acid like lemons and tomatoes will eat away at the copper finish. Not to worry though if you forget, since the copper will “heal” the damage by restoring its patina.
  • Use a copper cleaner specifically recommended by the manufacturer of your sink. Many manufacturers make their own cleaner, and you should invest in a bottle or two when you purchase your sink.
  • Don’t forget to clean the copper apron when you clean the sink. If you don’t, the surfaces will age differently and won’t match as evenly.
  • If you get a little too enthusiastic when cleaning your copper sink and cause light scratching or remove the finish a bit, don’t worry. Again, copper is a forgiving metal and can heal light damage with patina on its own.
  • Be careful not to place hot pots or pans in or on the copper sink, as this will damage the finish. This is especially true for copper sinks that have an added finish on them.
  • If you purchase a copper sink that doesn’t have a specific cleaner, one of the most recommended copper cleaners is Wright’s Copper Cleaner.
